FISCHER FIELD BACKGROUND
By: Peter Handley

Rollie Fischer Field was named in honour of Rollie and his contributions to the game of. The property behind the Gardens was owned by the city and it was decided to construct a major sports complex even though part of the park was in a flood plain. Two softball fields were built along with the football field and a two sided scoring stand was constructed (designed by Sam Jacks after the one built at Amelia Park). There was also a tobaggan hill and a horseshoe pitch. Britt Jessup knew Roy Thomson of Fleet (the father of Ken Thomson) and persuaded him to part with $50,000 (a lot of money at the time) for lights ... thus the park complex is called Thomson Park.
